North Royalton residents were in for a treat as the city, schools and partner organizations prepared to host the annual Health Fair & Family Expo on Saturday, November 2, 2024. This year's event, which took place at North Royalton High School, 14713 Ridge Road, from 8:30 a.m. to noon, promised a blend of health awareness, community engagement, and family-friendly activities.
The highlight of the day was the 14th Annual North Royalton 5K Bear Run, a popular event that drew fitness enthusiasts from across the region. Adding to the excitement, North Royalton City Schools hosted a Student Turkey Trot, combining physical activity with a food drive to benefit the North Royalton Food Bank.
"This event epitomized our community's commitment to health, education, and giving back," said Superintendent Michael Laub, North Royalton City Schools. "It was a perfect opportunity for families to come together, learn about health and wellness, and enjoy a day of fun activities."
The expo boasted an impressive lineup of health services and screenings. Southwest General Health Center and UH Parma Medical Center offered free health information and screenings, including physical therapy assessments, blood pressure checks, non-fasting cholesterol and glucose tests, hearing screenings, and stroke assessments. Attendees were also able to learn hands-only CPR and receive flu shots courtesy of Discount Drug Mart Pharmacy.
Community engagement was at the heart of this event. The North Royalton Police, Fire, and Recreation Departments were present with safety vehicles, showcasing their services to the community. Veterans could connect with representatives from VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare and Cuyahoga County Veterans Services.
Animal lovers were in for a treat with the presence of Friends of City Dogs Cleveland and Kitten Krazy, offering pet rescue information and adoption opportunities. The school's mascot, Gibby, entertained attendees, along with face painting for children and therapy dogs to interact with.
One of the most anticipated features was the complimentary pancake and sausage breakfast, courtesy of North Royalton City Council President Paul F. Marnecheck. "This breakfast was our way of bringing the community together and starting the day on a positive note," Marnecheck stated.
The event also included a Vitalant Community Blood Drive, underlining the importance of blood donation in healthcare.
Mayor Larry Antoskiewicz expressed his enthusiasm for the event, saying, "The Health Fair & Family Expo was a testament to North Royalton's spirit of community and our commitment to the well-being of our residents. It was events like these that made our city special."
